Citronella oil is made by steam distillation of citronella grass. The two main types are Sri Lanka (Ceylon) citronella oil, and Java citronella oil. Citronella oil is mostly used as a mosquito repellent. Citronella oil is often used as an insect repellent, although research has indicated it may also have antifungal properties and help with wound healing. In foods and beverages, citronella oil is used as a flavoring. In manufacturing, citronella oil is used as a fragrance in cosmetics and soaps. Citronella oil’s antifungal and anti-inflammatory properties may help to speed up the healing of wounds. When inhaled, citronella may have a relaxing effect on some people and a stimulating effect on others.
